The 'ashtray' wings inherited this nickname simply because of their striking resemblance to... an ashtray. art deco' type ashtray ;). It has to be said that their rather prominent shape is rather evocative. The purpose of adding such a grille was to facilitate cooling of the 'LHS' red hydraulic fluid system (the forerunner of the 'LHM'). Among the multitude of modifications to the front fenders that would take place throughout the DS's career, the 'ashtray' fenders themselves would have their share of small differences and subtleties. The model shown here was most likely produced between January 1960 and May 1961. Indeed, the insulating trim is clearly visible, as are the shape of the grille and the screw threads, typical of early versions. L'ajout d'une telle grille avait à priori vocation de faciliter le refroidissement du dispositif de liquide rouge hydraulique 'LHS' (l'ancêtre du 'LHM'). Parmi la multitude de modification des ailes avant qui auront lieu durant toute la carrière de la DS, les ailes 'cendriers' auront elles-même droit à leur lot de petites différences et subtilités.
