In 1970, Citroën finally brought out a model worthy of stepping in between the 2CV and DS, the Ami 6 (then 8) being technically far too close to the 2CV. This was the GS, with its resolutely modern lines for its time. The addition of flush handles is particularly noteworthy. The last straw for DS owners, who will have to wait another two years to see these same attributes ;). In a quirk peculiar to Citroën, the handles for the 1975 model year were again different, however, and made of aluminum instead of chrome-plated zamac (the latter, it should be noted, has aged rather badly). These handles are now available in remanufactured form, but beware of quality, which can sometimes pose serious problems when fitted to doors. One last point: while the GS handles are identical in shape, they are not suitable for the front doors, which incorporated the lock cylinder on the left-hand side, in the same logic as the SM, and unlike the DS ;).
