You may know the very good Volkswagen commercial, with the guy who is a pain when he has to admit that he drives a diesel car ;-). The release of the Golf Diesel in 1976 was a novelty in this segment. The engine was very sluggish, but it did the job. Volkswagen was then widely followed by other manufacturers, and from the mid 80's and the democratization of turbocharged engines, there was really no reason to be ashamed of driving a diesel ;-). Although the situation is changing again today, but for other reasons... Another particularly interesting article: the one about the new Alpine A310 V6.
